Prim. Dr. Andrej Šikovec began his dedicated work in vascular surgery early in his career as a young surgical specialist. From 1991 to 1992, he further specialized as a British Council scholar at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in Bristol, United Kingdom. In 1994, he continued his training under renowned vascular surgeon Prim. Dr. Pavel Šebesta at the Na Homolce Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic, a leading institution for cardiovascular and neurosurgical diseases.
He was the first in Slovenia to introduce endoscopic perforator vein surgery (SEPS), as well as minimally invasive treatments for chronic venous insufficiency, including endovenous laser ablation and ambulatory phlebectomy.
Dr. Šikovec has authored more than twenty scientific articles published in Slovenian and international medical journals, along with several professional publications intended for a broader audience.
He is highly committed to sharing his expertise and surgical techniques with both Slovenian and international colleagues. He regularly organizes annual training courses on laser treatment of venous insufficiency. In 2024, the 18th international workshop titled “Ultrasound-Guided Endovenous Laser / RF Treatment of Varicose Veins” was successfully held. Over 250 physicians from around the world have trained under his mentorship.
Dr. Šikovec is an active member of several national and international professional organizations, including the Slovenian Society for Vascular Diseases, the Federation of European Salaried Doctors (FEMS), and the European Society for Vascular Surgery. He has also contributed to the development of Slovenian clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm and chronic venous disease.
